According to research by Alessandro Acquisti
(listen to the story
on All Things Considered on NPR), an economist at Carnegie Mellon, web visitors are more likely to "...admit more sensitive, embarrassing and even illegal behaviors to a Web site that's been designed to look kind of cheesy." Evidently, websites with a more formal design and prominent privacy policies cause visitors to pause, leading fewer to give up their private information.
